Dean Phillips was born in 1969 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to parents DeeDee (Cohen) and Artie Pfefer. Tragically, Artie, his dad died in the Vietnam War when Dean was just six months old.
DeeDee got married to Eddie Phillips in 1972. Eddie is the son of advice columnist Pauline Phillips and the heir to the Phillips Distilling Company. Eddie adopted Dean as a result of this union, and Dean subsequently adopted the Phillips surname.
The family moved from Saint Paul to Edina in the early 1970s, where Dean attended The Blake School. Dean Phillips is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated from Brown University in 1991.
