Growing up as the youngest of four daughters in the Riverside neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut, Rafferty attributes her passion for the arts to her parents, Mary Lee Rafferty, Chairwoman of the English Department at Convent of the Sacred Heart School, and Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr., who worked in finance and oil painting. Her sisters, Maura, Ann, and Constance, also played a role in shaping her upbringing.
Rafferty attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where she graduated in 1989. She pursued a major in English and Theatre at Hamilton College, graduating magna cum laude in 1993.
