Katherine McNamara was born in Kansas City, Missouri and was the only child to her parents Ursula and Evan McNamara. She was brought up in Kansas city Missouri where she started stage acting at a young age. Then later moved to Los Angeles in 2011 in order to kick-start her acting career.
She graduated from high school at age 17, and then moved to study Business Administration at Drexel University where she obtained a bachelors degree.

- Katherine started her acting career while she was living in Kansas City. In 2008 she made her acting debut in a short film “Get Off My Porch”.
- In 2010, she featured in the 2009 Broadway revival of A little Night music and also appeared on three episodes of the Disney XD series “Kickin It”
- In 2015 it was announced that McNamara would feature in a role of Kat on the third season of “The Fosters”
