Jacob Paul Tapper was born on March 12, 1969 in New York City and raised in Queen Village, Philadelphia, is the son of Theodore S. “Ted” and Helen Anne Tapper.
His mother, originally from Canada, retired as a psychiatric nurse at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, while his father, a Dartmouth and Harvard Medical School graduate, served as the president of South Philadelphia Pediatrics.
Both parents, originally Jewish, with his mother having converted from Presbyterianism, played a significant role in his upbringing. Tapper spent childhood summers at the Jewish camp Camp Ramah in the Poconos.
He attended the Philadelphia School and later Akiba Hebrew Academy before graduating from Dartmouth College in 1991 with a B.A. in history, modified by Visual Studies. Tapper, a member of the Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity at Dartmouth, briefly attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
