Career
Jeffrey Toobin started his career by freelancing for The New Republic while still a law student. Following his successful passage of the bar exam, he served as a law clerk to U.S. Circuit Judge J. Edward Lumbard of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Toobin then played a pivotal role as an associate counsel for Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh during the Iran-Contra affair and Oliver North’s criminal trial. Subsequently, he transitioned to become an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.

Toobin authored “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case: United States v. Oliver North” (1991), detailing his experiences in the Office of Independent Counsel. Despite objections from Walsh due to the revelation of confidential information, Toobin successfully defended his right to publish in court. Shortly after, he resigned from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Brooklyn and shifted his focus to writing.
In 1993, Toobin commenced his career as a writer at The New Yorker and, by 1996, had become a television legal analyst for ABC. Over the years, he delivered broadcast legal analysis on notable cases, including the O.J. Simpson criminal trial, Michael Jackson’s 2005 child molestation trial, the O.J. Simpson civil case, and Kenneth Starr’s investigation of President Bill Clinton.
Toobin published several books on these high-profile cases, such as “The Run of His Life: The People v OJ Simpson” (1997) and “A Vast Conspiracy” (1999). These works were later adapted for television, with the Simpson case becoming a mini-series and the Clinton investigation becoming an episode.
Joining CNN in 2002, Toobin continued his career as a legal analyst. He received an Emmy Award in 2000 for his coverage of the Elián González custody saga.
